Chapter Ten

Gussie awoke on Tuesday morning and switched off the alarm. She had dreamed about her father that night. He had been standing in the room smiling at her and Jimmy dancing around the living room, and she had the feeling like that had pleased him.

Other than the four years she spent in Lafayette in college, she had always lived in this same house since her mama brought her home from the hospital. When she decided to pursue her law degree, she chose a school close enough to home that she could commute, just so she wouldn’t be away from Blanche and Ina Mae. She wished that her father had been there the day she hung out her shingle in a little storefront on the town square, but at least she had the memory of her mother’s happy face from that day.

“Was I being silly carrying on like that with Jimmy?” she asked as she slung her legs over the side of the bed.

Who gives a damn? If you were having fun, that’s what matters, Blanche’s voice chided. Life is short. Enjoy every moment.

She reached for her phone and hit speed dial for Ina Mae.

“Good mornin’, sleepyhead,” Ina Mae said. “I’ve been up for an hour and got a load of laundry done. Plus, I fixed us a sack lunch to have at the church around noon. I should get extra stars in my crown because I made enough to feed Elvira, too.”

Gussie yawned. “You should have to take Chester to your house if Sissy doesn’t stay in town. You’re always up before dawn anyway, so his crowing wouldn’t bother you. And, chère, if that woman even sneezes this afternoon, she’ll blame your sandwiches for poisoning her.”

“I’ll take Chester if you agree to take that pesky house bird,” Ina Mae shot back. “And don’t give me any ideas about my sandwiches!”

“Oh, we could never split the birds up. They’d grieve themselves to death, and Blanche would come back to haunt us both. I’ll take the high road and let you have both of them,” Gussie teased.

“That’s so kind of you!” Ina Mae’s tone dripped sarcasm. “We’d better both work real hard at keeping Sissy in town, or else those birds are going to accidentally get turned loose, maybe in Elvira’s house.”

Gussie put the phone on speaker mode and straightened her bed as she talked. “That’s funny, but I don’t want to talk about the birds. Did you notice the way Sissy and Luke were flirting last night?”

“No,” Ina Mae answered, “I was too busy watching Jimmy make goo-goo eyes at you.”

“And what about you and Paul?” Gussie asked. “I haven’t heard that man string together more than a dozen words in years, and yet he talked to you all evening.” She headed for the kitchen. “But forget about us and think about Sissy and Luke. Our matchmaking is looking like a big success. Did you see the way he was looking at her all evening?”

“Nothing escapes these old eyes,” Ina Mae declared.
